A sinus lift, sometimes called a sinus augmentation, is done when the patient does not have enough bone mass in the upper jaw, or the sinuses are too close to the upper jaw bone. Sinus lift is quite usual in the premolar and molar areas of the upper jaw . A successful dental implant needs a critical mass of surrounding bone in order to bind to it and to provide enough stability and strength.( at least 5 mm. in width and 7 mm. in height).
The sinus lift is meant to provide this critical mass of bone. The procedure starts with a local anesthesia to the relevant area. A gum tissue is cut and raised exposing the bone. A small window is then opened in the bone. Finally, the access to the lower part of the sinus(the membrane) is gained. This membrane is gently pushed up and away from your jaw. Granules of bone-graft material are then packed into the space where the sinus was. The space that is filled with the bone graft material will eventually form into bone tissue and increase your total bone mass in that area.
After a sinus lift, you need to wait several months for the bony material to harden and integrate with your jaw. Once this happens, the implants will be placed.
However, in some cases (when there is enough bone mass for initial stability) Dr.Sooparb may place an implant and then place bone graft material around the exposed part of the implant. The new bone tissue will then actually grow and form around the previously exposed part of the implant.
